Prevention & community education

TSAS recognises that a whole of community responsibility is needed to prevent and reduce the impacts of sexual abuse and violence.  TSAS works across the whole of community to deliver sexual assault awareness, prevention programs and trauma informed education.

We believe that sexual assault and child sexual abuse is sustained by gender inequality and normative social behaviours that continue to shame, silence, and prevent change.  TSAS works for change by challenging the condoning of violence; challenging harmful gender stereotypes and roles; promoting consent, safety, independence, and decision-making; and demanding positive, equal relationships based on respect.

TSAS recognise the need to provide safe spaces for survivors to share their stories and advocate for the voices of survivors to be included in all prevention, education and decision making.

School Program

TSAS collaborates with secondary schools to provide students with awareness raising and violence prevention education to promote consent culture and reduce the risks or sexual abuse and sexual violence.

Safe Hands Protective Behaviours Program

TSAS provides protective behaviours education to individual children and schools groups from age 3 years.

This program aims to empower children with essential knowledge and skills that may lessen the likelihood of them becoming victims of childhood sexual abuse.  TSAS practitioners use a range of play-based and creative methodologies to cover topics including emotional literacy, body safety, rights and responsibilities and safety planning.  At TSAS we are committed to prevention and recognise the need for parents and children to be brave and encourage them to seek support.

Sexual Violence Awareness Month

TSAS hosts an annual Sexual Violence Awareness Month (SVAM) event during October each year to:

• raise community awareness about sexual violence
• promote the support options available to people affected by sexual assault and sexual abuse
• uphold a clear message that sexual violence will not be tolerated in our communities

Community Events and Projects

The Powder Room Project:

In 2022 the Powder Room Project was born out of the TSAS Women’s Survivors Group who met fortnightly to support one another and heal.  Through their desire to contribute to other survivors within the community, they identified a need to provide women and teen girls with basic hygiene and personal care products.  The Powder Room Project donation bins across the Tablelands ensures that survivors from TSAS and the Women’s Centre can access these products and receive a message of dignity and support from the broader community.
